Photo shoot Images

Best Photographs:

I have chosen this as one of my best photos as I thought was a very clear shot and a good lighting shot. That goes with the Christmas theme as well with the background and the bird, as well as being good for promoting a product. The angle of the product makes it feel different instead of it traditionally facing the camera.
The jewels that are around the Chanel product makes the product feel more expensive go buy. I could use this product as a front cover to advertise this product or to put it in the contents page so the product is advertise to page number that it links to. This relates to my target audience for being for women or for males that want to give women this product. To improve I can remove some of the photo to get rid of some of the space that there is.

I have also chose this photo as one of my best photos as I thought it was a clear shot with good lighting. This goes with the Christmas theme and this is good in promoting the Lynx product that could be used inside my magazine as this is able to show that the product Lynx attracts by the scent. This is why I added the girls in the background of the photo. I also like how the girls don't look straight into camera this adds to the "attract" effect of the Lynx. This is good for a teenage target audience or as a gift for a male. To improve I could have the Lynx bottle to be hold further forward to focus on it a bit more.

The reasons I have added this as one of my good photos is that it goes with the Christmas theme with the background and the Santa. This is aimed for the older target audience which this could be used in the magazine to promote the product as I way of buying or making the Santa. The angle of the product adds difference as it does not use the similar ides of just taking a photo with the Santa facing straight towards it.

Not so good photographs:

The reasons why I put this as a not so good photo is that I agree with the comments that I am focusing more on the baubles then the product itself as the sharpness isn't really there on my picture. Also, I feel like i should of gone in a bit closer as there i a lot of empty space around the basket and maybe i could of moved the angle of the basket to the side to add the extra touch. However, this goes with the Christmas theme and the target audience of this product would be for older teenagers or as a gift for a women.

The reasons why I put this as a not so good photo is that I agree with the comments that it wouldn't really work as a possible front cover of a magazine. This does go with the Christmas theme as well and has good lighting in the photo. However, I tried to take this as a handheld photo which for next time i might do as I don't think it is that clear. I do like the idea that they are not looking in the camera as it breaks the conventions.

TA Research of my images

Comments on my photos:

These comments on my raindrops photo has helped my want to use a photo like this as these comments suggest that I am good at creating a photo with focusing on a section like these raindrops then has another section like a background which is blurry. I have learned that I could improve my horizon level ready for my practical unit.

These 2 comments on this photo of the sky and the top side of the school building. I would use this photo but I would take this image again to make to make sure I don't get the reflection from the light in the classroom in the photo which I can practise doing this.

These 2 comments on my photo of these pictures suggest that it can be hard to get rid of reflections as they are in glass frames. I think in my photography practical I would not take one of these photos again as its hard for the refection unless there is photos of pictures without a frame in the school.

Finally, these comments on this photo suggest that the photo I took was quite good, I think I would use this in a similar way for my photography practical unit buy maybe do the shot at a less of an diagonal shot. This was a good shot to use as I had the sun that came through the window which made it bright and clear though on the right hand side the sun is bright which doesn't match up with the other side so I would take this photo similar but at a different time of day. Finally, a comment said they like it was almost abstract so I would want to try and take some more abstract shots.

Selection and Rejection of photographs

Best 3 of my images:

The reason that I have chosen this picture as one of my best 3 as I like the way that the raindrops are the main focus in the picture and that they are clear to see. The background is a little out of focus which I like as it adds that extra detail in the photo but still focusing on the raindrops that are there. I like how the colours in the background contrast together as well. This photo could be good if I did it so the raindrops was blurred in the background and maybe make sure my horizon level was a bit better.

I have chosen this photo as another of my favourite 3 as it is a very clear shot straight down the corridor which I like as its like the end feels miles away. Also the way the walls and the light on the walls look like they bounce of each wall going down the corridor which I thought look really good. The photo could be a bit better if I maybe shot it after the pictures on the wall so it was just the corridor to see how that looked.

I feel like this one if the best out of the best 3 I have chosen as I like the clearness of the shot and the low angle of how I took it. The way the sun is peeping around the building adds to the detail of the photograph and the shade of blue that is in the sky. I like how the blue sky is reflecting off the window of the school building as well as I think it adds that extra difference in the photo. The only reason I don't like this photo is the way there is a reflection in the top left corner but I still feel its one of the best pictures.

Worst 3 of my images:

The reason I have put this as one of my not so good photos is because there is a big reflection from inside when talking the outside which has ruined the photo. However, without the reflection I think that the photo would be a good clear shoot with the different colours of the landscape. If I took this photo again I must remember to check if there is a reflection first.

The reason I have put this as one if my not so good photos as well as this was the first photo I took and after uploading it too the computer I could tell that it was quite a blurry photo and there was a lot of reflections from the lights on the wall. Next time, if I took this photo I will make sure on my camera that it is fully focused and try to make sure there isn't much of a reflection.

Finally, this is a not so good photo as even though it is a side shot next time I should move more forward and not put the door in the image for example. Another reason is that you can see a person's elbow in the photo which I will have to double check that you can't see anyone in the photo. The reflection in the photo overpowers in this as you can't really see the right hand side of the meddles or trophies this means that next time I will have to try at a different angle or try to put something up to block the reflection that appears.

Research: Shelter Online

Shelter Charity

Layout:

The layout on the homepage is basic but tells a lot about what they are doing to help with the homeless around the world. They have a theme of colour red throughout their page which could represent danger of people being more homeless but then the red can represent love as they are helping the homeless around the world to try and have a better life.
The main part of the homepage is advertising their challenge this year that they are walking up a tall tower to try and go the top to get a good experience and support the homeless people. The view on the background represents this as they could have completed the challenge and that they are happy that they have experienced this.

Other things on the homepage is the bright blue "Donate" button this shows that is easy to do and that it is standing out as the colour blue is different with the red or white theme. The blue "Donate button is always on the right top side on every page so that it is easier to find the donate button. As well as the Shelter logo always being on the top left side of every page. Also they have a navigation bar to get to other sections of their website.

Finally, on the website they have many photos that take you to different sections of their website with different people of genders and ages being happy of how people have changed them. They have very clear and writing that people will be able to understand at most ages. Furthermore, they have big, bold key sentences for example, "The fight isn't over..." and "our work has helped millions of people" this is very eye catching for people when they see this on the homepage this tells you what they have done.

What do they do?

This is a very clear part of the homepage that explains what they are doing their main aim is to help people that are struggling to get homes. Below they have all the ways people can get in touch with them if you need any help. They also continue to have the red theme throughout.

They have a link that will take you to their contact page if you need help as you can call or chat online or find local services. Calling the free helpline which is available all year round so no one is not forgotten about if they are in need of help. The contact us continues with he red theme.

Under the tab of what they do they show you that if you spend £1 it shows where it will go this is good as most people that donate to charities they don't know where all their money goes. Finally, they again have kept with the red colour theme and the blue theme which is the colour of the "donate" button this is good buy keeping the colour the same throughout and not using lots of different colours which could be confusing.

Mission Statement

This mission statement is very clear to represent what they do as a charity and change people. They have kept with that red colour again  that represents he danger of homelessness but the love of helping them. The word "safe" and "strive for change" represents that they want the homeless people to be able to change and have a safe home.

Extension - YouTube

On their YouTube they continue with the colour red which is represented on their website and indicating their symbolic code of colour to them. They have lots of mini videos that show people talking about how they have helped in the charity or what the charity is doing to help other people. They also have a videos of people's stories on how homelessness has effected them and how the shelter charity has helped them change for the better by giving them the change they wanted. These videos are very emotive on showing how how bad and upsetting being homeless can be and making you feel that you should donate as you could feel this way if you was in this situation that they are in.

Research of institutions 2: Bauer Media

Research of institutions 2: Bauer Media

Bauer Media UK is an entertainment network of iconic, multi-platform brands. Bauer began in 2008 when it became part of the Bauer Media Group, it was founded in Hamburg in 1875 and now is in its fifth generation of family ownership. Yvonne Bauer is the CEO of the Bauer Media Group today.

They have recently joined with these products: Multi-platform media: print, digital, radio, TV; print houses, postal services, distribution and marketing services.

Webpage conventions are used on the Bauer website as the website has a clear well laid layout with a navigation bar to get to different sections on the website to find out more information on other things if you hover your curser on the writing on the navigation bar they are all in different colours depending on what you want to go on. Now on the webpage that you are on when you go onto the website it has a video that uses up most of the homepage this is good as it is clear to see what the video is about. Theriot Stuart Hall as he says “emphasis is the importance of visual representation” this is represented here as the website front page is got a contrast in blue colours all down the homepage which work well together and go throughout all their website sections. The writing that is used is in a sand serif bold font so that it clear to read throughout their website. At the bottom of the website there is a link to go to their twitter page which is useful to keep up with their updates at the company and that it is an easier way than going into their website to find a new feature.

On the navigation bar if you click on brands you can see all the brands of magazines that they own, then you can filter what brands of magazines you want to see that they own. These magazines that are advertised can be for mass or niche markets as some magazines will be for certain people whereas as a certain tv channel could be for mass markets. Bauer Media uses an audience finder that helps people know what they should read a certain magazine, radio or television by using age and gender they have done this by doing their own research of what magazines, radio and television are for example buying a certain magazine that is bought by a certain age and gender. This can go with the theorist’s Curran and Seaton as they say that “magazines should reflect the interests of an audience otherwise they will go out of business” this is represented here by the audience finder as they want a magazine, radio or television that can be read or watched by everyone as if they owned a few companies based on one age and gender they would not go as far so they need to own a lot of companied that target different age and genders to be able to stay in business.

Bauer media are a cross media platform in magazines, digital, radio, television and advertising. In magazine Bauer Media UK magazine division that is led by Rob Munro-hall who owns Group MD magazine Media. Bauer Media is a member of both the PPA and Magnetic. For digital Bauer XCEL, Bauer’s digital arm, manages all digital brands which reaches over 130m unique users globally. Radio is owned by Bauer Media’s radio business, led by Group MD Dee Ford and Bauer Media are members of Radio Centre. Finally, for television The Box Plus Network, a joint venture between Bauer Media and Channel 4, produces and broadcasts seven of the UK's most inimitable music television channels.

Textual analysis of a magazine

Textual analysis of a magazine: Stuff Magazine

I will be analysing a gadget magazine called Stuff this magazine comes out monthly and has reviews from gadgets that is new out from that previous month. This magazines will be for male teenagers and male adults as they are represent that males are more into gadgets and technology than women.

Firstly, the magazine has a large masthead saying "STUFF" this title could represent as very informal word. The title also represents that they review a wide range of things that are to offer for them. This masthead is a white colour which stands out very well with the grey background that is there.

Next, the main feature of this magazine is talking about a new phone that has been released by calling it "Return of the king" by talking about this phone they have put a long shot of the phone on the front of the magazine cover covering most of the page that is there this could also mean as it calls it the "king" the phone is placed straight facing you that you should be looking down at it. The text that says "Return of the king" for the main feature also is a yellow colour which again matches the grey colour on the background, the title also it in large bold writing as when it is in a shop it will stand out to people so they will go to read it to see what this new powerful phone is. Also this title could link to the theorist Roland Barthe as according to his theory he says that meanings vary according to interpretation this means that they are saying "king" as its a very good phone and the best around. However, we can interpret the word "king" as being a powerful leader and that puts rules to people and by saying "return" it represents that the phone has come back again more powerful than before. This main feature title can also effect the social classes as they all can't afford this phone that is represented as a powerful phone and that it has come back better than before.

Under the main feature they has used serief font text and have boxed the sentence to make it stand out with the grey colour of the background and the large yellow writing for the main feature. They use direct address saying "your new favourite phone"  this is representing that you should have this phone now but again going back to social classes not everyone is able to afford this new luxury phone.

All magazines will have a barcode, price and issue number so u know if its the latest released magazine to buy and if its in your price range to read these magazines. Above the barcode they talk about gadget reviews inside, they also use symbolic code to represent the gadget reviews by putting stars to link with reviews. They have also put around the edges of the magazine different fonts and styles of what else is in the magazine that still attracts you to buy it but in the magazine it isn't a main feature inside. They all go with the yellow theme that will match the grey background.

Research: The History of magazines: early magazines

History of magazines:

In 1663 the world's first magazine published was in Germany and it was called Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen. It lasted from 1663 to 1668.

In Britain the oldest consumer magazine still is print is The Scots Magazine which was first published in 1739, though multiple changes in ownership and gaps in publication. The magazine is on subjects of Scottish interest and is published monthly. Although, publication continued until 1826; at which point sales had declined to such a point that it was withdrawn. However, in December 1887 publication resumed as a partial successor to The Scottish Church under a new owner and continued until 1893 when once again it was withdrawn. It was published between 1922 and 1924 as The Scottish Church. In 1924 publication as The Scots Magazine resumed, this time by the St Andrew's Society.

Magazines targeting women:

The first magazine that was specifically designed just for women was called The Ladies Mercury that came out in 1693 and published in London. This was founded by John Dunton and was published for 4 weeks by The Atheian Society. The Ladies Mercury was about them responding to questions about love, marriage, behaviour, dress and humour. It was printed both sides on a single sheet of paper.

Also, magazines targeted women a lot in 1920s as new magazines appealed to young women with a sensuous image and advertisements for appropriate clothes and accessories they would want to purchase. Also, the some women magazines showed that women should be in charge of men.

Magazines targeting men:

Men's magazines have existed for centuries but it was hard as it depended on the terms magazine and journal was defined back then. In 1731 The Gentleman's Magazine was published in England by Edward Cave and was often considered the first modern magazine. It ran for almost 200 years until 1922. Cave's wanted to create the magazine as a monthly digest of news and commentary on any topic the educated public might be interested. Cave, who edited The Gentlemen's Magazine was the first to use the name magazine.
